Plants like vetiver grass are used in phytoremediation to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater by utilizing their natural ability to absorb, collect, and/or degrade constituents of their soil and water environments.

Vetiver grass is a two-meter-high grass that functions as a barrier in the soil, trapping silt and slowing down water movement. As a result, grass helps to keep the soil moist while also delivering the nutrients that crops require.

CHED SAFE>GRS>FOSHE project, successfully conducted a Webinar-workshop on Biodiversity Conservation and Phytoremediation, LiDAR Technology, and Policy Forum on January 26 and 28, 2022.

Forty-one LGU officials, and barangay captains and officials; and 21 attendees from Malolos, Meycauayan and San Miguel, Bulacan, and Baler, Dingalan and Maria Aurora, Aurora virtually attended the first day and second day of the said webinar, respectively.

Participants also expressed their intent to attend a full-time training on LiDAR technology for additional information and to acquire basic skills on mapping.

Across the world, wetlands are of great importance to humanity. All agricultural production depends on water which is transported and provided to humankind through wetlands. More than half of the world relies on wetland-grown produce for their staple diet, for example from rice paddies. Wetlands also provide more than a billion livelihoods across the world in an array of activities that also deliver food, water supplies, transport, and leisure. Wetlands loss contributes to poverty and food insecurity. The focus of the World Wetlands Day campaign is to protect and use wisely the world's wetlands and the resources they provide, to save them from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded. Here in Central Luzon, we have 19 identified wetlands covering more than 16,000 hectares. These play important roles like storing clean water for our use, providing a home for nature, keeping us safe from flood and storms. Therefore, we should do our part to conserve and protect our wetlands. Join us in our efforts to value, manage, restore, and love our wetlands.
