Trainers’ training on fire prevention was sponsored by the Institute on Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM), adopting this year’s theme of the Bureau of Fire Protection, “Makiisa, makialam, at makipagtulungan upang sunog ay maiwasan” on March 28, 2012 at the IGS Minitheater, CLSU. The objective of the Institute, through its Disaster Risk Management and Public Health Department, is to make our dear CLSU a disaster-prepared community. FO3 Gener Ramos of BFP Science City of Muñoz discussed the compositions of fire and how fast a fire can spread. Pointers on how to prevent fire and on proper things to do during fire were given SFO1 Roberto Lopez. FO1Ulysses Uy taught the participants the basic fire fighting techniques and he also shared his personal experiences while on duty. The different ways on dragging and carrying victims of fire were demonstrated by FO1 Arnulfo Pol. Dr. Sace tried the fire extinguisherDrills on putting off a fire using fire extinguisher and water from a fire truck wereROTC Officer put off the fire using hose experienced by the participants, as facilitated by SFO1 Lopez. Participants are the faculty and staff of ICCEM and officials of ROTC, as headed by Dr. Annie Melinda Paz-Alberto and Prof. Deolito Ben, respectively. They will also form the fire brigade at CLSU.

The Central Luzon State University through the former Environmental Management Institute (EMI), now Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM), in its capacity as Regional Integrated Coastal Resource Management Center for Region 3 is conducting research on critical biodiversity resources including sensitive ecosystem, and designing and operating a biodiversity conservation program. The research undertaking is in line with the Integrated Coastal Resources Management Project (ICRMP) of the DENR which has as overall objective “to enhance coastal resources management and reduce poverty among fisherfolks through the introduction of sustainable livelihood activities and resource management practices.”It will also engage itself to monitoring activities to ensure the sustainable implementation of the programs. CLSU will also serve as a venue for holding conferences to disseminate research findings. According to Dr. Annie Melinda P. Alberto, ICCEM director, the two-year ICRM Project has three major projects for the Zambales Coast, namely: biodiversity assessment of coastal ecosystems; conservation activities; and Information, education and communication (IEC) activities. The first project started last October. It has three sub-studies, namely: Study 1 - Biological assessment and biodiversity mapping of selected coastal ecosystems of Zambales; Study 2: Assessment of selected coastal environments of Zambales; and Study 3: Socio-economic, anthropological, and policy studies on biodiversity and coastal resource management in Zambales. The project leaders are Dr.Alberto, Dr. Armando Espino, Jr., and Prof. Oliva Parico, respectively. Conservation activities include the identification of biodiversity sites, implementation of action plan for marine turtle conservation, and stock enhancement of commercial invertebrates and ranching of sea cucumbers. The IEC activities include the upgrading of EMI Biodiversity Museum, showcasing the coastal resources in Region 3, disseminating research results through presentation in different fora, publishing research results in scientific journals, and popularizing information for local audiences. The second and third projects will commence after the second phase of the first project.
ICCEM celebrates CC Consciousness Week

In celebration of the Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week, with the theme, Creating Convergence on Climate Change last November 19 to 25, 2011, the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) arranged a tree planting activity for graduating students, together with the faculty and staff. Narra seedlings, donated by CENRO, Muñoz, were planted along the fences at the third gate. The plant was chosen because studies show that narra is a carbon sequester. This is the graduates' legacy to CLSU and their contribution to beating climate change. Some students of BS Biology, Hotel and Restaurant Management and Education also joined the celebration by planting Sansevieria trifasciata, locally known as espa-espada. In addition for its high aesthetic value, this plant is also popular for its being a phytoremediator. To complete the observance, the no-smoking time from 8:00 to 10:00 in the morning was advocated to all CLSU constituents.

P2M Biodiversity Center in Central Luzon to be established in CLSU The Central Luzon State University-Environmental Management Institute (CLSU-EMI) received a P2M grant from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research for the establishment of a Biodiversity Center in Central Luzon. A part of an integrated research to be conducted by the EMI, the Center will be constructed beside the EMI Building. It will showcase the results of the integrated research on agro-management practices, biodiversity utilization, socio-economic studies, biological pesticides and biological control agents to be conducted by the EMI.This will be done by adopting on-site and off-site biodiversity conservation schemes, presenting sustainable livelihood options, engaging in IEC activities through state-of-the-art technologies, data banking of agricultural crops diversity and biodiversity, producing commercial biodiversity products, and promoting biodiversity through eco-tourism. The proposed Biodiversity Center will have three major areas: biodiversity museum, biodiversity laboratory, and training room. The biodiversity museum, which will augment the existing one, will house the agrobiodiversity collection and research results of agrobiodiversity assessment studies in Central Luzon. This will be equipped with display boards, diorama, aquaria, and a flat screen monitor. The biodiversity laboratory will be utilized in the conduct of biodiversity research undertakings while the training room will serve as a venue for trainings and seminars on biodiversity and environmental management and an orientation venue for visitors. Dr. Annie Melinda Paz Alberto, project proponent and EMI director, said the Center is expected to be constructed in three months and will be open to students, teachers, researchers, farmers, member agencies, and staff of local government units and other interested clientele towards the end of the year. She also hopes that through the Center a wider information dissemination and better public awareness on the importance of biodiversity specifically in the conservation of the natural environment will be achieved.

SCIENCE CITY OF MUNOZ (PIA) — Central Luzon State University (CLSU) will implement starting September a P15.4 million grant from Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the engaging Food and Agriculture Resources Management (eFARM) Academy Program. To run for two years, it seeks to bring technologies and innovations to a larger and diverse audience such as students, life-long tourist learners, farmers, local government units, and Philippine and foreign higher education institutions. “CLSU will develop educational modules using different modalities and media to promote matured generated technologies that are ready for transfer and commercialization,” CHED Office of the Deputy Executive Director Officer-In-Charge and International Affairs Director Lily Freida Milla said. “The university was encouraged to realize this program as its formidable implementation of agri-aqua research and development activities may open doors for more international collaborations,” the official furthered. In a statement, CLSU President Edgar Orden said eFARM Academy envisions being an engaging platform that will support the positioning of the university as a premier international techno education tourism hub for agri-fishery. “The program will be capacitating the stakeholders on agri-fishery technologies, food security, and food business through actual and virtual learning modes,” he emphasized. Program lead Gella Patria Abella explained that eFARM Academy has three components namely eFARM GROW (Generate. Reap. Opportunity. Wealth); eFARM KITCHEN (Knowledge, Innovations, Technology, Culinary Know-How and Product Enhancement); and eFARM Academy (Online Learning). With these components, the developed food and agriculture technologies will be showcased, and the products will be made available for consumption. “They will be shared through on-site visits, transformative digital platforms including virtual classrooms, and live streaming via Radyo CLSU to reach the target beneficiaries. The commodities included for product development and culinary arts hope to highlight the Philippine culture,” Abella added. The program team is composed of faculty members with diverse specializations to operationalize the program in a very holistic manner. (CLJD-PIA 3).
